Milqueya was born on September 8, 1952 in the Dominican Republic. As an adult she migrated to the State of Alaska and in later years became a U.S. citizen and a resident of Alaska.
Shortly after arriving in Alaska, Milqueya met Maria Elena Ball, owner of Mexico in Alaska. During the 29-and-a-half years in Alaska, Milqueya became a vital part of Mexico in Alaska Restaurant not only as manager but also as a close and dear friend of Maria Elena Ball.
It was at the restaurant that Milqueya served the community of Anchorage by serving all the customers with a welcoming smile, esteem, and formality. After the initial meeting of each "customer" each individual that walked through the door of the restaurant became a family member and a close friend. Milqueya learned their names, faces, their dreams for the future, desires and fears. She became each family member's confidante, mother, sister and best friend.
Milqueya considered all friends of Mexico in Alaska Restaurant as her family. She endeared herself to them and they soon grew to depend on her for advice not only because they valued her opinion but also because they too considered her to be part of the family.
Milqueya was greatly admired for her capacity to make everyone feel as a number one priority, to assist and accept everyone, for her love of friends and extended family members, and for not hesitating to voice her opinion to right a wrong.
The Milqueya A. Franjul Memorial Fund is being established in memory of Milqueya, a friend, activist and writer. The initial contributions are made to benefit low income (as defined by the federal government) and/or homeless Alaskans who are in need of assistance but fail to qualify under city, state, federal or other non-profit organizations or agencies in areas of education and emergency needs.
